North Carolina Law Affects Residents Bringing Home Big Game From Out of State

In an effort to prevent Chronic Wasting Disease from starting in North Carolina, the State passed a law last year that prohibits Game animals such as Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Elk and Moosefrom being imported from states that are known to have occurrences of CWD.
If you're a North Carolina resident, or happen to be passing through North Carolina on your way home from an out of state hunt, you had better be cautious if you have Game from on of the states listed on this map of states with CWD occurrences.
This law will affect North Carolina residents who travel across the border to hunt Whitetail Deer in West Virginia as cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been documented there.
Symptoms of Chronic Wasting Disease
Although it's thought that CWD does not affect humans, it's 100% fatal to members of the Deer family. Here are the symptoms of Chronic Wasting Disease.
- Extreme weight loss
- Excessive salivation, drooling, drinking or urination
- Listlessness
- Lowering of the head
- Blank facial expressions
- Repetitive walking in set patterns
- Lack of coordination or other displays of neurological disease
If you take a Deer, Elk or Moose with these symptoms or with a confirmed case of Chronic Wasting Disease, it's not recommended you eat them.
