not sure how there going to work it with southern but in northern u use the prior years tag for early bear season sept 18 -oct 15

Bear season here in the Southern Tier starts on the first day of Bow Season for deer, so the bear are not scared. People get confused about our tags. We get a Bear tag along with our Deer tags, so we are not using the exact same tag, the Bear tag just comes along with the regular big game license when you buy it.

As a former resident and current lifetime license holder in NY, I think either you or I need to re-check our sources. I have carried a bear tag with me to Cattaraugus County every year that I have hunted. I agree with the others that it would be good for bear season to return to coincide with the deer opener, which if memory serves me right, is the way it was years ago. But just for the record, I believe bear hunting has been open in a number of those counties mentioned by you. But using a deer tag for either/or is news to me, and may be accurate – I don’t know.

I agree with what mark said that the bear are a scared of hunters and wont come out to often because they are a scared….Season needs to start early so they arent so a scared…

i believe that black bear season should also be open on opening day of gun season because by the time bear season does open there a scared from deer hunters and no where to be found.

It seems kind of strange to be able to use the same tag for deer or black bear. But I suppose it’s not a whole lot different that us having a fishing license that includes Atlantic salmon, it just cost more than the normal license.
