Wisconsin deer hunters still must worry about chronic wasting disease (CWD) this year when they get out to go deer hunting.
Judging by the numbers that the Wisconsin DNR is putting up on their website, the number of deer sample who had CWD has stayed about the same as last year. In 2006 about 30,000 deer were sampled and of those, 205 were positive. As of July 20th, 2007, 856 deer sample were tested positive, however this sampling was around 130 thousand.
The good news is that CWD is still being confined to the South Central part of the state. Take a look at the map below for the counties involved. You can find out more about CWD in Wisconsin by going to the DNR's website. Click here for their website.

The areas outlined in Red are the CWD eradication areas. The areas outlined in Green are the CWD reduction areas. Not being from Wisconsin, I'm not sure exactly what "CWD Eradication Area" means, but I have a pretty good idea and it's not pretty.
Wisconsin deer hunters have had to put up with this disease for more than a few years. I hope their DNR will get a handle on it soon.
Good luck this season to my fellow Wisconsin Buck Hunters! Be sure to share your stories and pictures with us.
