Missouri Rolls Out Mentoring Program For Hunters

Missouri has to be one of the most Youth friendly hunting states in the Union. They have a host of youth-only hunts and programs for school age kids to get them involved in the sport of hunting and shooting.
Missouri has now developed a mentoring program for older teens and adults who may not otherwise get the chance to hunt or shoot.
This new program will allow anyone who is 16 or older to purchase a firearms hunting permit without having been certified by a Hunters Safety Program.
The requirement of this program is that the Mentoring hunter must be in the immediate presence of a Hunters Education certified hunter who is 21 or older.
This new program will begin in March of 2008. Just in time for Missouri's Turkey Season.
This sounds like a great program for those hunters in Missouri who have no where else to turn and may feel a little intimidated by actually purchasing a firearm and heading to the woods by their self. It'll also be an opportunity for others to take a older teen or adult hunting and show them the safe and proper way to handle firearms and to hunt.
I wish other states would implement something like this. Missouri obviously started this in an attempt to slow or even turn around the declining numbers of hunters in the sport. I wish them and all other states the best of luck! We need more hunters to participate in our sport and to take up the cause when us older hunters are gone.
