@ Chuck,

Congrats on your Deer.

It does sound like the bullet failed to expand. Something that is one problem of the older .243 rounds as I stated in the article.

I would invest in a box of Premium 243 ammo. Take a look at Hornady's Light Magnums in 100 grain or their Custom Ammo line with a 100 grain bullet.

You should also look into Federal Vital Shock ammo with 100 grain Nosler Partitions. Their other 100 grain Vital-Shock ammo with 100 grain boattail should also do great for you.

Good Luck,

Hi Wyatt,

It's difficult to say not knowing what type of field it is or how big it is.

More than likely, those rubs were made earlier in the year by a Buck rubbing the velvet off their antlers. I wouldn't pay that close attention to them.

Instead, if this field is a feeding field, try to find where the Deer are entering the field. This should be fairly easy and there are probably more than one area where they do enter. Resist the temptation to set up on the field.

Instead, I like to set up between the field and bedding area. This way, I can catch Deer as they move to the field in the afternoons and as they are heading back to the bedding area in the mornings.

Normaly I'd set up about 150 to 200 yards back from the field. It all depends though on where the Deer are bedding and how they are using the field.

Good Luck,

Don

Hi Lawrence and welcome to Oklahoma.

If I remember correctly, Hinton Oklahoma is just West of Oklahoma City.

That's a tough area to find good Public Land. However, I believe Fort Cobb is just down the road. They have decent deer hunting opportunities.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife, Fort Cobb has the same deer hunting Season as the rest of the State except Deer gun which is only open the first 9 days. Also, it looks like you can only use a Shotgun.

Pick up a copy of the regulations and double check this before heading out. You can find a copy at nearly any Wal-Mart.

Don't forget the Holiday Antlerless Deer Hunts! This could be just the ticket for your Daughter.

If you're looking for some Private land, you might have a tough time finding it, especially this late in the year.

You should start by asking friends and family who live in the area. Next, try visiting the local feed stores and ask the people there if they know of anyone who would let a Father and Daughter hunt on their land. It wouldn't hurt to offer them something in return.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I agree with this train of thought.I use a savage 30-06 bought new 6 years ago for 325.00 this riffle is a tack driver. With a fare amount of range time with the weapon of choice you will be happy with the time you put in.I have shot deer 80 to 100 yards out off hand some thing i did not practice much but firing my weapon and getting comfortable with it makes all the difference in the out come of shooting a animal.I would suggest 30-30,243,30-06,308,and 270 for most big game 30 cal. will take down moose, elk and deer with a well placed shot. This dose not have to cost a lot of money just some basic understanding about your weapon and the benefits of shooting often as possible.Remember the guys that spend all that money are paying to brag about antlers and things that have nothing to do with are hunting heritage.Enjoy the out doors and providing good food for you and your family.
