Okay, I'll admit it. I've been loosely following this story every since the controversy broke over whether or not the Boone & Crockett Club was going to name the Johnny King Buck the New World Record. Honestly, I could care less because I lost faith in the B&C Club many years ago. I think they've became just another good ole boys club and haven't represented the spirit under which the Club was founded for a long time now.

For those of you who were counting on the King Buck to be crowned the New Typical World Record, dethroning the Milo Hansen buck and bringing the Crown back to the U.S., well, you just got excited for nothing.

The head Honcho at the B&C, Jack Reneau, has come out and said that the right antler doesn't have a G3, but an abnormal G2. So the scored the huge Whitetail Buck as a Non-Typical, which means it will not be in contention for the top spot. Many experts believe Mr. Reneau is wrong. I happen to be among those who think he's wrong, but I'm not scoring expert. I'm just an Average Joe Deer Hunter who likes to look at big Buck Racks! I did learn how to rough score years ago, but I'm really not into what ever buck scores. But you take a look at the Buck -> here and tell me if you see a Non-Typical?

Again, I'm not an expert and I haven't handled the head gear, so my opinion is based solely on pictures. Which isn't much.

But this just goes back to why I'm not a B&C supporter any longer. In my opinion, there's little to no integrity left in the organization.

My only question is, why is this Reneau character so against this buck becoming the No 1 buck. Sure, he'd have to swallow his pride and say "I was wrong about the Johnny King Buck", but so what? He won't even let a panel decide on whether or not it's a Typical or Non-Typical. Makes you wonder why he's so dead set against his buck being scored as a Typical doesn't it? Wonder if he's kin to Milo Hansen?

But like I said above, at the end of the day, it really doesn't make a difference to me. Go ahead B&C, P&Y or Buckmasters, play your little "Record Book" games. The only record book that matters to me is in my head and heart and every Deer I kill makes that book!

Just a quick note out to all my hunting/gun toting buddies this morning. I received an email from GunsAmerica this morning about a kids movie out on the market right now. The movie is called "The Iron Giant". Here's the email I received giving me a heads up on the movie.

Hi Everyone.

I would just like to warn gun owners and especially hunters to NOT BUY a movie on the rack at Wal-Mart this week called "The Iron Giant" for your kids. It looks like a great movie and overall it actually is, but it demonizes deer hunters and guns in general. It is THE WORST I have seen to date. The focus on the gun and say "guns kill" over and over again. The whole point of the movie is that the robot doesn't want to be a gun.

If you don't want to be surprized by a movie you innocently bought for your kids, avoid it, really. They could have introduced the concept of death to the big robot any number of ways, but the Hollywood elitists chose to use deer hunters.

These hypocrite trained monkeys probably went to lunch at Arbys everyday to eat a cow that someone else killed for them, WITHOUT A GUN.

Blech blech blech why can't these idiots understand that America has real problems, and none of them have to do with hunters or guns.

-ga

Thanks GA. Now you know what NOT to buy your kids! I have to admit, I never heard of the movie. But now that I have, I'll leave The Iron Giant on the shelf before I would bring garbage like that home to my daughter.

Don

If you've been putting off applying for a Texas Public Land Controlled Hunt Permit, you time is running out. Actually, if you planned on archery hunting, the deadline was August 4th for the Texas Public Land Archery Permits.

Gun hunters for Texas Whitetails, Mule Deer and Exotics have until either September 4th or the 18th, depending on which one you apply for.

The deadline for Private Lands Texas Permit Deer Hunts is September 4th.

Application for Feral Hog Permit Hunts on Texas Public Land is November 4, 2008.

The application deadline for the Texas Guided Deer Hunts is October 2, 2008. Unlike many other hunts, there is a $10 application fee and there is no permit fee. Most of the other Texas public land hunts will cost you a $3 application fee and either a $75 or $125 permit fee if drawn.

The Texas Gun Mule Deer permit deadline is September 18th with a $3 application fee and a $125 permit fee if drawn.

In the Texas Private Lands Management Buck hunts, the deadline is Sept 4th. The application fee is $10 and there is no permit fee if drawn.

There are other categories to choose from, so don't delay. You don't have much time if you want to get your name into the hat for one of these coveted Texas Whitetail Deer Hunts. You can see all the hunts that are availiable, the application fees, permit fees and deadline dates by downloading this 2008-2009 Texas Public Land Permit Hunt Guide.

Good luck and if you're successful, send a photo and tell us the story behind it. I just might put it on the blog!

If you're an Oregon Deer Hunter, or you hunt Pronghorn, Bighorn Sheep, Elk or Rocky Mountain goats, the deadline to purchase the application is May 15th.

There are several ways to apply for a controlled hunt in Oregon. You can go to a license agent, by fax or apply by mail.

If you're applying by fax or mail, you'll need this form.

You can download this form to see the proposed tag numbers and the season dates for the upcoming 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Another opportunity that Oregon Deer Hunters may want to consider is the State's Landowner Preference Program (or LOP).

If you fail to draw one of the permits, you'll still be eligible for a general season tag or any leftover tag. These are on a first come, first served basis so be on the watchout!

Here's hoping your 2008 Oregon deer season is a successful one. It's just about time to be getting out and finding those Oregon deer hunting hotspots!

For those of you who put in for the Oklahoma Controlled Hunts, you'd better get over to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife's website and enter before the May 15th deadline.

Starting this year, applications will only be taken online. So don't be looking for the booklets at Wal-Mart or your favorite Sporting Goods stores because they won't be there.

Is it me, or does it seem there are fewer and fewer hunts each year? Especially in the Deer Category.

One hunt that I did not find on the Application is the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge Deer hunt. What gives?

I only put in for that hunt the first year it was offered. If you've been through Sequoyah NWR, then you know they still have quite a few deer out there.

Don't confuse the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge for the Sequoyah Park Resort. These are two different hunts and I've already heard people saying "Hey, they opened Sequoyah NWR up to Buck hunting."

Wrong!

Sequoyah Resort Park is on Fort Gibson Lakejust East of Wagoner. Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is in Sequoyah County on the McClellan Kerr Navigation Channel (Arkansas River).

My Picks For the 2008 Oklahoma Controlled Deer Hunts

If I were only looking to kill a big buck in the Oklahoma Controlled Hunts, my choices would be as follows, in this order.

The last two weekends at McAlester AAP

Cookson, the last weekend - The last weekend because it is prime Pre-Rut/Rut. I know the area well and there are some brutes walking around those mountain sides and valleys.

Wichita Mountains- A big buck haven and very hard to get drawn for. I believe last year there were over 7000 applications for 35 tags. Cookson is also hard to get drawn into. Last year they had nearly 1800 applicants trying for 25 either sex tags.

Salt Plains, the last weekend - Another hard to draw hunt. Last year, the last weekend had something like 800 hunters trying for 10 either sex tags.

Now, if you're just after any ole deer, your chances are much better by putting in for Anterless only hunts.

My top picks for a skin head would be:

Fort Gibson WRP. Lots of deer there, lots of Does!

Cherokee GMA. Consistent producer of fat Does year after year

Salt Plains. Yeah, there's a lot of Deer there!

What ever hunt you choose, I wish you the best luck. I've been fortunate to have been drawn on many hunts over the years and these are some of the best that Oklahoma has to offer.

I enjoy putting in for a new area each year until drawn. For the last several years, I've been putting in for Beaver River simply because I figure anything that close to the Kansas line has to have a few big bucks running around!

By the way, save on of those Elk Tags for me! I haven't been drawn yet in my lifetime and I'm due one!

I ran across this story in the Houston Chronical about an outfitter in Texas who runs hunts for young boys.

The outfitter, Mike Arnold is a past president of the Texas Trophy Hunters Association.

His outfit, called the Cross Trail Outfitters, has a simple Mission Statement.

"Building men, preserving our heritage and sharing our faith"

I have to tell you, I think Hunting as a sport, and society in general, would be in much better shape if more and more of us became involved with the youth. Especially in the way Mr. Arnold has.

From reading the article, not only do the boys (many who are at risk boys) get to go deer hunting, they also learn about being men.

The story said that the boys pray before each meal and before going hunting. After the hunts, they sit around a campfire and discuss the days activities along with discussions about life. The boys are asked "What kind of man do you want to be?"

The story is also a great testament to Mr. Arnold, who went from a 6 figure salary to zilch overnight, and his faith.

After you read the article, I invite you back here to share your thoughts.

I know most of you think like I do, that this is a bunch of B.S. But it does give you an idea of the type of people who we are dealing with. The sad thing is, the media is giving these kooks more and more air time, to the point of legitimizing them.

I'd also recommend reading the comments that were made.

Wow, this just blew me away when I saw it on Remington's website.

I hope that Remington won't change too many things with the Marlin line. Remington and Marlin are two of my favorite gunmakers and they're both still making them here in the U.S.A. (yeah, I know about the Spartan line of O/U's, rotating block muzzleloaders made in Spain and the Serbian made 798's, but the main line is still made here) I hope they continue to do so.

The press release from Remington stated that the transaction to acquire Marlin should be finalized sometime in late January 2008.

I guess we'll all be watching to see what happens in the future with Marlin. Unfortunately, many times when these type of transactions go down, the company that is acquired get's skeletonized by the acquiring company. (this is a prime example here) That would be a shame if it happens in this case and it would cause me to lose a lot of respect for Remington. Probably to the point that I'd stop buying their products.

We'll just have to wait and see!

Four Minnesota Deer Hunters were shot on the opening Weekend of Minnesota's Deer Season. One was killed.

Here's a run down of the shootings from Channel 9 in the Twin Cities.

Craig Rupp, 60, was killed after being shot in the chest Saturday morning in his hometown of Elbow Lake while hunting. Elbow Lake is about 80 miles northwest of Willmar in western Minnesota. Rupp was shot while his hunting party flushed deer out of tall grass. A deer jumped up and shots were fired, with one shot hitting Rupp.

Duane Kaster, 62, of Aurora, Minn. was shot Sunday while hunting near Biwabik on the Iron Range. The St. Louis County Sheriff's office says the man was apparently shot by a 15-year-old member of the hunting party. He was taken to a hospital in Virginia, Minn. and later airlifted to Duluth.Kaster has been transferred to HCMC where he is in critical condition.

Brooks Lee Marti, 26, of New Ulm was shot around noon Sunday in Brown County. Marti and his hunting party were flushing a deer in a wooded area east of Sleepy Eye when he was shot in the left arm by another member of the group. Marti was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In Clearwater County in northwest Minnesota, Jeffrey Pike of Chaska accidentally shot himself around 1:30 p.m. Saturday when he put his gun down and it fired, striking his right bicep. He was taken to a Fargo, N.D., hospital.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

For one, all could have been prevented. Second, it seems that most of the accidents occurred when the hunters were flushing Deer. This could have been during a Deer drive or flushing Deer like Pheasants.

This is the most dangerous way to hunt Deer in my opinion. Especially when young hunters are part of the group. Regardless, these accidents shouldn't have happened at all.

My heart goes out to the Families of these Deer Hunters. I wish the wounded ones a quick recovery and my thoughts and prayers goes out to the Family of the deceased hunter.

I think we all need to emphasize safety before each Hunting season. Not only that, but if you're hunting with a group of Hunters, you should be going over safety rules before each hunt. Every hunter should know where everyone else is located at all times. Even if that means before a morning hunt and an afternoon hunt. You can never be too safe.

There has been a rash of poaching incidents in Southeastern Idaho recently and the Idaho Game & Fish is asking help from residents to solve the cases.

These cases aren't cases where someone shoots an animal illegally and puts it in their freezer. These animals were poached and left to go to waste. Poaching really gets my Goat, but shooting animals and leaving them lay to waste really gets me hot under the collar. These a$$holes need caught and sent to prison where they belong.

Here's a list from News Channel 6 from Pocatello Idaho.

-A bull moose was shot and left in Cellars Creek Drainage in Bingham County near Pasa la Coma Girl Scout Camp. The moose was shot sometime around September 26, 2007 and left to waste. A concerned individual reported the moose to Fish and Game on September 28, 2007. The moose was found intact and the antlers still attached. Someone had sawed off the right antler before conservation officers were able to examine the carcass.

The unlawful killing and wasting of the bull moose, which is considered a trophy species in Idaho, is a felony punishable by $10,000 in reimbursable damages, plus fines and court costs. The penalty is considered a "flagrant violation" which carries a minimum 1-year hunting license revocation and up to a possible lifetime license revocation. Furthermore, state law prohibits the possession of any wildlife parts from an animal which has been unlawfully harvested. Therefore, the person(s) in possession of the sawed-off antler is also in violation of state law.

-On Sunday, October 7th, a large pronghorn (antelope) buck was illegally killed and left to waste on private property on the east side of Bear Lake in an area known as Poverty Flat. Only the large set of horns from the antelope buck was removed.

-Three calf elk were reportedly shot October 15th, opening day of the bull elk season in Unit 75 (Bear River Zone B tag). The incidents apparently occurred in the Skinner Canyon/Pearl Creek area of Bear Lake County. One of the dead calves has been found.

-A large 4-point mule deer buck was shot and left to waste in the Garden Creek Gap area in Bannock County sometime around October 20th.

-An adult mule deer doe was illegally shot and left to waste in Caddy Canyon near the Black Rock area southeast of Pocatello. The incident occurred sometime within the past 10 days.

If you know anything about any of these incidents, anything at all, please call the CAP Hotline at CAP Hotline at 1-800-632-5999. You can also call the Idaho Game & Fish at Pocatello at 232-4703.

Any tip may help them break this case. Even if it seems insignificant, please call and give them the tip. You never know when the smallest tip may be the missing piece of the puzzle.
